As Mandinga immigrants remake themselves and their religion in Portugal, the place of money in social and ritual obligations is only one of several issues creating tensions and divisions between men and women, elders and youth, and those who aspire to global Islam and those who remain more comfortably rooted in African custom. I turn now to discuss two other issues, the ritual of the left-handed handshake and ritual wailing at funerals.
